01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
The obanzai set meal—a selection of side dishes made with seasonal vegetables, beans and grains—is a natural choice at Sumireya’s dining room. Alongside the set for 1,700 yen, there is a smaller 1,300-yen option with fewer main and side dishes, so you can choose according to your appetite. Vegetarian versions may be possible by advance reservation.
For something sweet, try okara cake with fermented red bean paste, or spiced carrot cake with frosting. Both cost 650 yen; the gâteau au chocolat comes with whipped cream. Drinks include hojicha and Japanese black tea from Hamakawaen Tea in Kumamoto, as well as seasonal herbal tea, each for 450 yen. Coffee is 550 yen.
The shop next to the dining room, which sells dried goods and household items, is another part of the experience. Visitor accounts mention bulk ingredients such as beans, grains, nuts and dried fruit, along with condiments including miso and soy sauce, and fresh vegetables. Take a look around before or after your meal for cooking ingredients and things for the home.
